flowers of vietnam

what an unexpected surprise in a most unassuming location. the signs say florist and coney island. yet, what you will find will renew your faith in the culinary skills of the 313.

salt and pepper prawns… yes you can eat the heads and everything. who knew, right? the papaya salad had just the right amount of heat. mere words cannot do the pork belly and rice dish justice. make sure to visit this foodie  prime destination and have a taste for your self!

takoi

takoi in cork town does not disappoint. every bite was exquisite. such unique and exciting tastes. we sat at the community table and shared some incredible food tonight at takoi, formally known as katoi.  the restaurant began as a food truck and has recovered from an arson fire nearly a year ago. kudos to chef Brad Greenhill and his team. not only is the food amazing, the entire aesthetic is an experience in itself.  our server mike was the best with great recommendations and the staff worked as an agile unit; keeping us well hydrated and fed with family style samplings  promptly arriving . little saturdays are my favorite day of the week. can’t wait to try a new venue next week.

tasteful + pretty + cool =  repeats for sure.

cass cafe

little saturday in midtown detroit: cass cafe. how obvious is it that i love shrimp? these three cajun shrimp were the just the right kind of spicy for my taste. enjoyed the cole slaw and sweet potato too. it was bitter cold in the city today. in fact, we waited in our cars until 6:00pm because that is when we could park in front of the university tower on cass avenue according to the sign.

the lentil soup was the perfect thing to start with. a mighty leaf tea assortment was brought to the table along with lemon and honey.  megs & i both picked the vanilla bean tea.

if you go to the cass cafe, check out the women’s restroom. there is a mighty massive latch for the stall door. there was something incredibly satisfying about the proportion. the atmosphere was full of contradictions. Graffiti plus the smell of cleaning products filled the senses.

the service was great and we liked the local art on the walls. look up on your way out to see the cool large mural.

little saturday…on the next day ;)

it’s 50 degrees in detroit on this extension of a little saturday and we were in midtown for tacos at alley (no cat) taco. one of us who will remain anonymous always thought this eatery was “alley cat taco”. there are laser cats on the walls though. we parked across the street from wills and walked over. the walkability of this part of midtown is lovely on such a warm january evening. unusually warm for the midwest actually but welcomed as a promise of the far off spring.

the burrito bowl and nachos were super! if you haven’t been to alley taco, we suggest that you try it. they enjoy a busy carry out scene but dining in was fun and the music was chill. ❤

maru

maru sushi + grill with both of my girls was a treat on this super cold little saturday in detroit. you can find this spot on fort street and inside the federal building. let me tell you that the firecracker shrimp are oh so incredible that a second order was placed. the peach tea and bacon fried rice was also special. ok, so we were quite famished [and perhaps a bit hangry ;)] when we arrived and miso soup, chicken gyoza, and rolls were ordered. not a fan of seaweed. and the built in gratuity was confusing. understood it to be as in france but not really. we will like to go back to try the udon and hibachi grills.  keep in mind that a student discount is offered on thursdays.  try to get a seat with a view because our city looks so fresh!

see you in the new year

xoxo

bangkok crossing

little saturday with g after we both passed our final exams! we enjoyed jasmine tea at bangkok crossing. g had pad seeiew with chicken. shrimp pad thai for me. then shopping at the great pop up shops! oh what fun it was to see the lights, ice skaters, and all the hustle & bustle in the city. pop up shops will be around till jan. 28th, 2018. there are so many nooks to gather around a warm fire in between finding treasures in the shops.

wishing you a merry Christmas full of miracles

be back soon <3

double rainbow

can you see the double rainbow over little traverse bay?

with thanksgiving travels away from the d and north last little saturday and today busy celebrating a special canine b-day AND looming finals we are taking a short break and will return to our culinary journey very soon

stay tuned…

ima

ima’s for repeats this rainy little saturday in detroit. and look, the lobster udon is still on special! It is $26 for basically two meals. ima’s kind staff will pack up your hearty leftovers. have I mentioned that they have a great gluton free selection?

we arrived cold and weary but left warm and nourished. the windows were steamy and there were many waiting for a spot by the time we left. this is the place to just be, eat udon, get warm, and be happy. just get there early. shout out to Jamie for her great care and service.

talk of work and dreams filled our time as we ate and watched the traffic pass.

drive down michigan avenue around dinner time and look for this happy, yummy place!

i learned something new today. detroit has an app to pay for parking. check it out: http://www.parkdetroit.us

seva

little saturday eats at seva on forest street in detroit was a vegetarian treat. we started with the cauliflower [pictured on the right] which was so yummy and flavorful. Megs had the veggie club and I found comfort in breakfast for dinner. my scramble with the soft cheese, spinach, and tomatoes was filling without being heavy. i have to find out if they sell the preserve that was in that little plastic cup. what was that goodness?

oh, and the atmosphere is great. seva is tucked away so that you don’t see it from forest but if you turn right on john r you will see a sign to take the alley. be careful of the potholes (small ponds maybe). navigating the parking lot was quite an adventure but so worth it.

a short walk & a short staircase to socra tea for michigan lavender warmth in a cup. we need to return for a longer stay with books and laptops for sure. ❤
